HCCS (Health Care Consulting Services, Inc.) was founded by Joanne Byron in 1983. The consulting firm has a team of professionals specializing in health care compliance, chart auditing, coding, documentation, billing, reimbursement, practice management, accounts receivable reporting services, accounts receivable analysis for revenue enhancement, gap and risk analysis, chart audits, internal controls, cash management services and more.
The firm has developed the Society for Strategic Coding, an education department, to provide distance learning programs to health care professionals, billers and to prepare coders for national certification boards.
We specialize in creating efficiency and accuracy of business processes, streamlining to reduce overhead expense and enhancing revenue through improved coding, billing and collections and assisting practices to develop new product lines for revenue generation.
Professionally trained coders are available for updating encounter forms, coding encounters, keying charges, updating computer master files, training in compliance with Medicare and Medicaid billing guidelines and to answer coding questions. Our professional team can come to your organization to perform audits, develop policy and procedure manuals, improve work flow, business planning, acquisitions and mergers and provide other practice management consulting services.

With over thirty years of health care experience, Joanne has served the medical community as a nurse, reimbursement specialist, medical auditor, coder and practice management consultant. She has developed medical office management programs at Lakeland Community and Catawba Valley Community Colleges and several hospital systems. She is the founder of The Society for Strategic Coders in 2002 and the non-profit organization, The American Institute of Healthcare Compliance in 2008 where she currently serves as Board Director.
Joanne is an approved AAPC coding instructor training professionals and administering the coding certification examination for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). She is also a professional speaker lecturing around the United States on topics such as: Coding, Auditing, Human Resource Management, Managed Care Contracting, Documentation, Billing, OIG Compliance, Collections and Accounts Receivable Management. She has been a manager in a mid-sized accounting firm in Acquisitions & Mergers to create large hospital-owned physician networks, provided education and training programs in practice management, internal controls, cash management, risk and financial management.
Her memberships and professional affiliations are: American College of Medical Coding Specialists (ACMCS), American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), AIHC (American Institute of Healthcare Compliance), American Society for Quality (ASQ), American Credit & Collections Association (ACA) and the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA).

Carl is a Licensed Athletic Trainer (ATC-L) in North Carolina, certified Emergency Medical Technician -Intermediate (EMT-I) in addition to being a certified CPR instructor. He provides training in emergency response to sports related injuries, develops protocols for emergency sports injuries used by EMS and trains EMS stations. As a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) through the American Academy of Professional Coders, he also has a subspecialty certification in therapy and rehabilitation coding. Carl specializes in therapy and rehabilitation chart audits, training and education programs in coding and billing. He is a national speaker with Cross Country Seminars and is on the part time faculty of Catawba Valley Community College teaching coding, billing anatomy and medical terminology. He has been on the professional team of Health Care Consulting Services, Inc. since 1995.

Ms. Drummond brings over 20 years of experience and nine coding and billing certifications: CPC-I, CPC, CPC-H, PCS, FCS, CMC, ACS-RA, ACS-OB/GYN and CMBS-I. She serves on the national board of Advanced Coding Specialists in Radiology and OB/GYN. Karen is a past presenter for the American Academy of Professional Coders and has worked locally and nationally educating physicians and their staffs on documentation guidelines and coding concepts. She is also an American Academy of Professional Coders approved PMCC instructor, who has taught medical billing and coding at Stark State College, Canton City Schools Adult Education, and Portage Lakes Career Center in Ohio. Karen has worked for two large hospitals teaching the residency program the documentation guidelines and as a coding manager.
Karen is a certified healthcare auditor (CHA) and obtained her Medical Compliance Manager Certification (MCMC) from the American Institute of Healthcare Compliance where she also serves on the Board of Directors. She is currently a consultant, chart auditor and instructor for new, experienced and physician coders. She is our lead CPC/CCS-P exam prep course instructor!

With over fifteen (15) years of medical billing and coding field experience, Denise strives to bring her talents to personally support her students. She has worked as a coder and biller for both the provider side as well as an auditor and claims reviewer for an insurance company. She is certified through the American Academy of Professional Coders with triple professional coding certifications in physician (CPC), hospital facility (CPC-H) and payer (CPC-P) designations. Denise is the lead distance learning instructor for the CPC-P Exam Prep Course and the Medical Terminology w/Diagnosis Coding Prep for ICD10 with the Society for Strategic Coders, education division of HCCS.

Ms. Penninger has been a passionate teacher, and student advocate, for the past 20 years. Her foundational approach empowers students to become successful learners. She has been involved in healthcare billing, coding, reimbursement and compliance consulting for over 15 years. She is a member of the American Academy of Professional Coders, and a certified coder, since 1995.
Carol specializes in clinical and administrative staff training in areas of reimbursement, documentation and coding, and providing critical knowledge of regulatory and reimbursement requirements in addition to OIG CIA projects requiring high-level compliance expertise. For the past 3 years, she has been a Senior Consultant/Auditor for Health Management Resources, Inc, a national consulting firm based in Salisbury, NC. She assists hospitals, by identifying areas of missed OPPS revenue opportunity, auditing billing of outpatient services, identifying causes of improper billing, and providing education to improve both reimbursement and compliance. She is also a Senior Associate of HMR’s AuditGuard team, which provides proactive auditing and education; protecting both physician and hospital-owned healthcare practices from RAC, OIG, MIC, and all other payor recovery audit programs.

Ms. Baxter has been working in the healthcare field since 2002. She has experience in medical billing, coding and collections for pediatrics, podiatry and outpatient services. She completed her medical terminology, Anatomy & Physiology, Cellular Bio-Chemistry and Microbiology as well as multiple Psychology courses at CuyahogaCommunity College. She also obtained her Certified Medical Collector (CMC) certification through The American Institute of Healthcare Compliance (AIHC).
